Insta-meeting - just add idea
I love this VC gig. I'm truly blessed to be allowed this opportunity. I started my day at 4:30a because I've got some really excellent companies rolling into the office today.
My basic newbie rule is this. You can always get one 30 minute meeting with me under the no harm/no foul policy if you follow these simple guidelines:
1. You have to be in my space. If you are doing phrama, chip design, a retail buyout, or other things we aren't doing, I'm not for you and we should not be speaking. Seems fair, right?
2. You have to have a summary of what you do and you have to send it to me in advance of our meeting. It can be an email, or a slide deck, or PDF, or Visio flowchart but you have to send me something that I can at least review and send back some questions prior to our meeting. I need at least two weeks notice so I can prepare. It's out of respect for you.
3. Our 30 minute no harm/no foul is for you to tell me what you do, how you do it, who will buy it, what problem is being solved, and what's the general thinking on how to make all this work. Just tell me. I have huge whiteboards, free pop (soda) and a tablet PC that I scroll on. Don't kill yourself on presenations, etc (yet). Let's just chat.
4. You recognize that you will be getting my personal feedback, high level suggestions on how you might want to pitch it and very general thinking on what I know, if anything, about the idea/space. You won't be getting a commitment for funding.
5. You understand, I am not likely to give you a list of VCs to call. Not what I do.
6. I typically don't 'do lunch', sorry, it's not my thing. I will meet with people all day long but lunch is reserved for my family, partners, and friends.
The no harm/no foul part comes into play because it won't count as a pitch. It's advice, free and worth every penny you pay, to help you get going in my world.
Ideas? You gotta em? I want to hear about them.
