Here's an interesting company to watch: gOffice. The basic premise of this site is a free, for personal use, web based office productivity suite of applications. The first couple are up and running, word processing and desktop publishing. They appear to have spreadsheets and presentations cooking in the lab.
But there is way way more at work here. Slowly read the home page, you will be shocked. Phone numbers for humans. They want you to call and speak to them. Free support. Got a problem? No problem, call us.
Then there is the paragraph which simply tells you, straight up, how they make money. Simple, straight language.
This isn't a site that declares war on Microsoft.
This isn't a site that craps all over existing software.
They use plan language: It's an alternative, it supplements.
Then sign up for an account, whoo hoo, they understand the world with postal codes and not zip codes.
As for a word processor, it's fine, it works and it does a nice job of creating PDFs.
Watch this company. This is the future. Right here, right now.
