Another way is to sometimes simply forget about the customer and the competition and focus on the employees. But I guess that applies more to established companies than to startups. And maybe only to services companies, where if your employees are happy, chances are so are your customers.

These diagrams are right on.

Those who obsess about competition shouldn't be in the innovation business, because then they are pretty unlikely to come up with a better search engine, a better photos sharing tool, etc. The second coming of the web has all been about geeks building cool,useful and innovative web applications. The competition has simply been a source of inspiration.
