Microsoft has announced a super program (DreamSpark) whereby students can get a full set of developer products at no charge.

It's not that difficult to see why MS is releasing these to students. Once you have spent the time to master an app, its pretty hard for some other app to get you to change. For example, it would have to be a pretty amazing app to make me want to leave PhotoShop and go through another learning curve at this point. If they are used to using a particular app in their student career then they are most likely going to use it in their professional career.
