I’m sure you’ve seen silly notices from things like Gmail or Hotmail simply saying some people are experiencing some problems, etc, etc, but life is good for most people. Tends to annoy customers, especially those who are impacted and this type of nonsense. Then you get CNET like headlines about systems being down and the company denying the problems, which leads to images of arrogance, corporate-speak, etc.
You have to admire the “important notice” on Air Canada’s web site concerning bookings made today for the level of detail.

Duh! It's called "scalability!". Clearly there is one server for each letter of the alphabet and the "P" server was down!
